Choosing the right injury attorney is as critical as the injuries you may have sustained and which gave rise to your need for a lawyer in a difficult time.

1.   Make sure your lawyer knows their stuff.  There are all sorts of personal injury issues - motor vehicle, motor cycle, sporting, cruise liner accidents and the like. Get a lawyer who has handled the sort of injury you have.

2.  Have they good good negotiation skills and experience?  The claim is most likely going to settle before it gets to court, but you need a lawyer with good negotiation skills and many do not have them.  Ask around, check with insurers if you can and others.  Make your own judgement about the attorney's speaking and negotiation skills but be aware this is a key factor in getting a great rather than a passable damages settlement.

3.  Do some online checking. There are good online directories where pre-screened attorneys are 'vetted' and you can see their areas of operation by geographic location and practice area.  Check them out yourself before picking up the phone.

4. Check the local Bar Association and other professionals, like accountants and contemporaries who may have had similar experience because there's nothing like finding out from a reliable source who is good, competent and effective.

5. Don't be overwhelmed by the outstanding advertising and puffery that goes with some of these firms. Often you will find a lawyer who may not be particularly experienced in the particular injury area that you seek but who is an effective and experienced advocate who can do a great job for you.  This is something of a volume business and you don't want to be grist to some attorney's mill.  Go with a good individual who you like and know you can work with.

Checking out a bankruptcy attorney is similar to the checking processes you need when looking for a good injury attorney - ask around and make the right enquiries.  However there are also some other aspects to bankruptcy attorney checking that make it somewhat more specialized.

First, you should understand that bankruptcy law, with the requirements under chapter 7, chapter 11 and so on, along with the gamut of laws and rules relating to insolvency is something that is often highly technical.  It is an area that does require someone with good knowledge and experience in the law.

You should not necessarily go with someone who may be a good lawyer, but who may not be wholly experienced in bankruptcy law.  This is different from the personal injury area where you may actually find a good litigator who handles your case with great competence even though they may not be highly experienced in the particular peronal injury area that you require.

Bankruptcy law changes and is subject to state and federal law requirements.  You need to go with an attorney who handles these laws on a near-daily basis.  Don't rush into an attorney however just based on what they say.  You should ensure you're going with someone who is (a) going to handle your case (and not have a junior in the office handle it) and (b) is well regarded and experienced.
